Do dental implants last forever

How Long Do Dental Implants Last?

August 9, 2023

Dental implants are one of the most popular types of tooth replacements. They are a type of artificial tooth that replaces both the crown and root of the missing tooth, making them unique compared to other restorations.

The healing process can take around 6 months, during which the bone and gums fuse to the metal post of the implant. After that, your smile is fully restored.

But how long does the restoration actually last? Are these artificial teeth right for you? Find out the answers below.

Do Dental Implants Really Last a Lifetime?

Dental implants can last a lifetime with the right care. The only part of the implant that’s more susceptible to damage is the dental crown. Regular wear and tear eventually weakens the crown and requires a replacement, but it can take 10–15 years for this to happen.

The abutment and metal post are much less likely to need replacing. This usually happens in cases of implant failure or trauma to the jaw, which damages the post and abutment.

Here are a few tips that can help you care for dental implants:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day.
  • Floss daily
  • Wear a mouthguard if you grind your teeth.
  • Don’t chew on hard objects.
  • Don’t smoke
  • Reduce hard, sticky, and chewy foods.
  • See a dentist near you routinely for check-ups and professional dental cleanings.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants only have an estimated 3% failure rate. This happens thanks to the thorough screening process that takes place during your implant consultation.

Here are a few things that a dentist will check for to see if you’re a good candidate for implants:

  • Healthy bone: Implants need a specific amount of healthy bone to be successfully implanted. People with bone reabsorption often need bone graft surgery first to be cleared for implants;
  • Healthy gums: Like healthy bones, patients also need healthy gums to support healing after implant surgery;
  • No titanium allergy: The implant metal post is made from titanium, which is a strong material most people can tolerate. However, patients with a unique allergy to titanium will not be cleared for surgery;
  • No underlying medical conditions: Some medical conditions or even their treatments may also prevent you from getting dental implants as they could interfere with healing and increase the risk of failure. Common examples are people living with diabetes or those undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.

However, even if you suspect you might not meet all these criteria, you should still see a dentist for an implant consultation. You may still be able to get implants if you get additional treatments.
